THIS WEEK’S NEWS & NOTES:
LET’S TALK ABOUT #BULLYING
Guidance Counselor, Matt Friedler, School Psychologist, Heather Greenberg, and I will be hosting a parent coffee to discuss what is (and what isn’t) bullying and how we can work together to support the children at school. All sessions will be the same and will take place on the following dates/times:
- Monday, 10/30 @ 9:00 (Middle School Cafeteria)
- Thursday, 11/2 @ 1:00 (Middle School Cafeteria)
- Thursday, 11/9 @ 7:00 (Elementary School Cafeteria at the PTSA Meeting)
WONDER FAMILY BOOK DISCUSSIONS
As part of our #ChooseKind campaign, please join our Librarian, Edna Auerfeld, for a series of book discussions at lunch. Please see this flyer for more information, as there will be ONE more opportunity to have lunch with your child to discuss the text. The last opportunity is this Friday, 11/3 during your child’s lunch/recess time.
AFTER SCHOOL BAND REHEARSAL FOR GRADES 4 & 5
After school band rehearsals will begin Thursday, November 2 and will run through mid-May. Rehearsals will be held on alternating Mondays starting at 2:30 (at dismissal) and ending at 3:50 pm. The band experience is very important for your child’s instrumental music education, and it is often what children enjoy most about playing an instrument. During extra band rehearsals, we will be preparing for our concerts. Please make every effort to have your child in attendance for each rehearsal.
CELLPHONE AND PERSONAL ELECTRONICS POLICY
We are currently working with the BOE Policy Committee to create a Cellphone and Personal Electronics Usage Policy. While we’re refining this important policy, we are going to ask that students keep cellphones away (in their pockets or backpacks) at all times. Students having cellphones on display is distracting both for themselves and teachers and also wastes instructional time and focus. The use of cellphones in school, whether it’s texting, social media, videotaping one another, and/or taking selfies can also lead to bullying situations. Should an issue arise, it is impossible to monitor the aforementioned content. In general, it is simply not productive for students to use their cellphones during the school day.
If you need to reach your child or if they need to reach you, they are permitted to use the phone in the office. If students must bring their cellphone to school, we strongly advise that they wear clothing that allows them to keep their phone away. If a student doesn’t have a place to contain his or her phone (pocket, bag, etc.), s/he can bring their phone to the office for the day. No cell phones during the school day will mean a safer and less distracting environment for children, and this environment will give all children the opportunity to thrive.

IMPORTANT NOTES FROM WEEK’S PAST:
HIGH SCHOOL CHOICE
Beginning in November, the 8th graders will begin the exciting, yet often difficult task, of exploring the individual high school options for next year. We have field trips for the students to visit Warwick on November 1st and Chester on November 3rd. During these visits students will be able to visit classrooms, speak with students and faculty, explore facilities, and see first hand the culture and individuality of each school. Furthermore, there will be a parent informational meeting on the evening of November 1st for Warwick and in Chester on November 6th. Finally, you will see a letter from Matthew Friedler, our school Guidance Counselor, encouraging you to reach-out to him if you have any questions or concerns. Attached to that letter will be the form for you and your child to complete in order to note your high School decision.
KINDNESS STRIPS
Two weeks ago, with your copy of Wonder, we sent home an envelope of Kindness Strips (just a few strips of construction paper!). We’ve had some questions about what to write/draw on them so please see this example.
